Downtown Sidewalk Project

The downtown sidewalk improvement project began on Monday, June 29, 2009. This is a project to replace sidewalks along both sides of Grand Avenue from Oak Street to Third Street and on First Street from Grand Avenue north to the alley. The project schedule above shows the approximate dates of when construction will occur in each block within the project limits.

The downtown sidewalk project is in full swing. Work began on the south side of 200 E. Grand in late June. The 200 block of E. Grand is complete. The 100 block of E. Grand is 95% complete. Construction is currently underway on the east side of the 100 block of N. First.

In addition to the new sidewalks that will be constructed from Oak to Third, the existing street lights are being replaced and the overhead wiring is being buried. City crews have completed the installation of the new light pole footings and conduit on both sides of Grand, east of the railroad tracks. Delivery of the new street light poles is expected in mid-September.

The following pictures depict the various stages of construction on this project over the past month.

8/5/09 – The north side of 200 E. Grand under construction

8/7/09 – A worker finishes concrete on the north side of 200 E. Grand

08/12/08 – “Bricks” are laid along the accent strip using a patterned roller on the north side of 200 E. Grand.

8/27/09 – Workers hand tool the joints along the colored concrete prior to applying the brick pattern on the north side of 100 E. Grand.

09/02/09 – The east side of 100 N. First under construction. Three store-front ramps were needed in this half block.

09/02/09 – Completed sidewalk on the north side of 200 E. Grand from the west end looking east.

Store entrances with steps are being retrofitted with ADA-compliant ramps as necessary. Handrails will be added later to this ramp in the 200 block of E. Grand.

All sidewalk ramps within the project limits will be reconstructed with new ADA-compliant tactile warning mats
